Scones & Tomes:
Join us for an informal book club Wednesday, January 8 at 11:30. We share books we have been reading lately while enjoying a sweet treat and a hot beverage. Attendees always get ideas for great books to add to their reading lists. Newcomers are always welcome.

Carnegie Café Coffee & Crafty Cards:
Craft a cute greeting card with Laurie on Wednesday, January 8 at 2:00 while enjoying a cup of coffee, tea, cocoa or cider. There is no cost, and no sign-up is required. We provide all supplies.

Down & Dirty Gardening:
FREE Seeds! We received a donation of 2024 seed packets from Home Depot, and we are giving them away! Seed give-a-way will start Thursday, January 9 from 12:00 -1:00. Then at 1:00 we will meet as Laurie tells us All About Tomatoes.

Yarnworks Social Club:
Join us for a fun and informal get-together for crocheters and knitters! We will meet the 2nd Monday at 2:00 and the 2nd Thursday at 5:30 to knit, crochet, socialize and enjoy a hot beverage. Callum Watson is volunteering to lead the group and will be available to answer questions or show you how to get started. We have yarn and hooks and needles you can use, or bring your own supplies and projects to work on.

This month's club will meet Thursday, January 9 at 5:30 and
Monday, January 13 at 2:00.

2024 Genre Challenge and Book Challenge 2025:
If you completed our 2024 Genre Challenge, be sure to bring your completed log sheet to the library. We love to see the books you’ve read for the challenge, and have a small gift bag for those who completed the challenge.

We are planning another Book Challenge for 2025, so stay tuned for more details.

As this will be my last newsletter as the Director, I want to thank all of you who have made working at the Traer Public Library such a joy. I leave the library in the capable and excited hands of the new Director, Donna DeBoef, and our wonderful staff of Judy, Sue, Laurie, Anne, and DuLaine. I have loved serving our community for the past 4 years, and will miss all of you and our wonderful library.

The book Turkey Claus, written by Wendi Silvano and illustrated by Lee Harper, will be displayed in the store-front windows throughout many of our local businesses. You can read the entire book by walking up and down the 500 block of 2^nd Street! Pick up a map at the library during normal hours, or out front when the library is closed. The map will let you know where to begin and end the walk. Enjoy!!

Free Online Resources for Children and Adults:
When your kids or grandkids say “I’m bored!” over Christmas break, don’t forget about the library! In addition to all of the materials we offer for checkout, we also have several free resources available when you can’t come to the library– all you need is a library card and internet access.

Tumblebooks – FREE kids ebooks online:
Are you looking for more fun ways to get your kids or grandkids interested in reading? Tumblebooks is an online collection of e-books for children. It can be accessed from any device with internet, so you can read on your computer, tablet or phone.

Kids can read along with over 1,100 animated, talking picture books, as well as chapter books, non-fiction books, and graphic novels, and play games and put together puzzles. And it’s all FREE for our library patrons! Just go to our website www.traer.lib.ia.us, click on the Tumblebooks box on the homepage, and put in your library card number.
You can also download the app on your tablet or phone.

Hoopla and Libby – digital services for Traer and Rural Tama County Patrons:
Enjoy audiobooks, eBooks, movies, music, TV, comics and manga, and more using either of our online digital services. You just need your library card number!

Used Book Sale:
Don’t forget to check out our Used Book Sale on the lower level. We are always adding items that have been donated or weeded from our collection. You can find more than just books – there are also magazines, puzzles, audiobooks and DVDs. Everything is available for a free will donation which you can bring to the circulation desk. This is a great place to find books to take on vacation, camping, to the pool, or just to add to your collection.

Book Clubs This Week:
The Monday Book Club meets TODAY at 2:00, to discuss Still Life with Bread Crumbs by Anna Quindlen. We will be handing out next month’s selection The Lions of Fifth Avenue by Fiona Davis.

The Chat & Chew Book Club also meets TODAY at 5:30. We talk about favorite authors and share books we have been reading lately, while enjoying a slice of pizza. Drop in and join us.

Outside the Lines Coloring (date change):
Due to the library being closed on our normal meeting day, our Outside the Lines Coloring Group will meet early this month on Tuesday, December 17 at 1:05. We provide bookmarks and greeting cards for all occasions for you to color. We also provide colored pencils and markers, or bring your own supplies! There is no cost or sign up required.

Early Out Activities w/ Jenny:
Attention kids Grades K-5! Join Jenny Hulme for another fun Early Out Program on Wed Dec 18 at 2:30. Her theme this month is Dine & Design. Join us for fun activity learning about table decorations and setting.

Sugar Cookie Contest:
Do you have a favorite sugar cookie recipe? Maybe you have a recipe handed down over generations? Or a recipe that your family begs you to make every Christmas? Enter our Sugar Cookie Contest! Make your cookies and bring 2 dozen to the library between 10:00 and Noon on Wednesday, December 18.
Then everyone is invited to stop in and taste-test and vote for your favorites from Noon - 5:00. There will be 2 categories: Best Decorated and Best Tasting.
You may enter your cookies in one or both categories! The winners will each receive a $25 Chamber Gift Certificate that can be used at any Traer Chamber business!

Get Active at the Library!
Our Fit & Feisty exercise group meets every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 1:00. We offer a variety of exercises, and you can participate from either a sitting or standing position, so it’s appropriate for all fitness levels.
We also offer Chair Yoga on Thursdays at 2:15. This is a very basic yoga class that focuses on relaxation, stretching, balance, and breathing. All exercises are done from either from a seated position, standing and using the chair, or beside your chair. You do not have to get down on (or up from) the floor! There is no cost for either of these programs. Give one of them a try!

StoryWalk:
From November 27 - January 5, the library will be sponsoring a StoryWalk!
A StoryWalk is an outdoor display of a picture book. It inspires families to do something together outdoors, centered around literacy. This activity is a creative way to combine movement and literacy! The book Turkey Claus, written by Wendi Silvano and illustrated by Lee Harper, will be displayed in the store-front windows throughout many of our local businesses.

You can read the entire book by walking up and down the 500 block of 2^nd Street! Pick up a map at the library during normal hours, or out front when the library is closed, beginning November 27. The map will let you know where to begin and end the walk. Enjoy!!

Carnegie Café Coffee & Crafty Cards:
Join Laurie to craft a cute greeting card on Wed. Dec 4 while enjoying a cup of coffee, tea, cocoa or cider. There is no cost, and no sign-up is required. We provide all supplies.

Get Active at the Library!
Our Fit & Feisty exercise group meets every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 1:00. We offer a variety of exercises, and you can participate from either a sitting or standing position, so it’s appropriate for all fitness levels.

We also offer Chair Yoga on Thursdays at 2:15. This is a very basic yoga class that focuses on relaxation, stretching, balance, and breathing. All exercises are done from either from a seated position, standing and using the chair, or beside your chair. You do not have to get down on (or up from) the floor! There is no cost for either of these programs. Give one of them a try!

Early Out Program:
Early Out Activities from 2:30 - 3:30 on Early Out Wednesdays (days with early school dismissal). We will offer STEM activities for children in grades 3-6.

Dec 11 -Christmas Countdown Craft.

Children in grades K-5 can join us on Wed. Dec. 18 for Dine & Design w/ Jenny Hulme.

Watercolors with Stephenie:
Join Stephenie Bellwood on Friday, Dec 6 at 2:00 in the Talen Community Room for another watercolor painting class. We focus on learning a different painting technique each month. Newcomers are welcome! You do not need any prior painting experience to enjoy her classes! All supplies are provided.

Holiday Happenings:
We have several activities planned for Holiday Happenings this year.
Stop in the library on Friday, December 6 from 1:00-5:00 to sign up to win a Christmas Gift Basket. We will also have cookies and hot cider on hand for you to enjoy.

Then at 5:30 in the Kupka Cultural Center, enjoy the sounds of the Holiday season with the Union Carolers. This will be followed by Denny Berger leading The 12 Days of Christmas.

On Saturday, December 7, bring the kids to the library at 10:00 to hear Santa read Twas the Night Before Christmas, have pictures taken with Santa and Mrs. Claus, and enjoy cookies and juice.

We received a donation of A LOT of 2024 seed packets from Home Depot, and we are giving them away! You can help yourself to some we have placed in the card catalog in the library entryway. Seed give-a-way will start January 9 from 12 -1.
